Why I Cannot Call Dominance a Choice: A Reflection on Kink and Identity

By Aidan Sunassee · September 12, 2025 · 4 min read · Reflections

This piece is a reflection on how I came to understand my dominance as more than a sexual preference, a hobby, or a role, but as part of who I am. It traces the pull toward structure, responsibility, and chosen order that has always shaped how I connect and love.

I became aware of my interest early, before I even had the language for it.

It was the pull toward control, structure, ritual, and the charge of power imbalance. It clicked later when I understood that this wasn’t random, it was a pattern of what I sought in connection. For me, BDSM is not a hobby or an accessory. I identify as a Dominant. That is not just a role I play for fun, and as much as I recognize that for many, it may only be a fraction of what they sexually explore, I cannot see it as anything but a part of my identity. It is how I relate to others, how I love, and how I structure the emotional and physical space around me.

It was always an odd feeling to carry around, because I did not wake up one day knowing I was this way. I knew early that control, responsibility, structure, and the charge of guiding another person meant something to me. I did not have a word for it. It took years and experience to understand that what I was craving was not simply about power over someone, but about power for, and dedicated to, someone.
To me, that distinction matters.

For me, kink exists far beyond the physical acts people associate with it. Yes, there is physicality. Restraint, discipline, rituals, denial, pleasure, correction. But in the dynamics I have, those are tools, not the purpose. The purpose is the dynamic. It is the knowing that another person has chosen to place themselves under my structure and that I have chosen to accept the responsibility of leading, shaping, protecting, and using them, both as I see fit and as is best for them.

Psychologically, it grounds me. It makes the world simple in that space. I set the expectations. I decide the pace. I listen closely and I act deliberately. When I am in Domspace, I feel like everything unnecessary falls away. There is no guessing, no second-guessing, and above everything, there is no chaos. My focus sharpens entirely onto the person in front of me and what they need within the limits I allow — think Csíkszentmihályi's 'Flow State' (but then I could speak of the parallels there for hours at a time). This state of intentional presence is addictive and from my experience, very few things outside of this dynamic come close to offering that feeling.

Philosophers and psychologists speak of transgression, of breaking societal codes, of jouissance and pleasure beyond pleasure. As a researcher myself, I understand the theory and don't deny that many's experiences of kink may reflect these modalities, but given this writing aims to speak of personal experience, here's mine: I do not experience my dynamic as rebellion or chaos. My dynamic feels like order. It feels like choosing to live by a set of rules no one else imposed, but which we both agreed to live within. There is a comforting intensity in that. There is also the truth that within the exchange of power and control, all people are satisfied. My satisfaction comes not just from using them, but from seeing them thrive under my control, from witnessing their devotion and eagerness to serve me, and from knowing I can take them to places they would not go on their own.

If I could explain one thing to someone outside of this, it would be this: it is not about abuse, nor is it reckless or selfish. It is discipline, communication, focus, responsibility, and deep emotional connection turned into erotic energy and structure. A submissive is not weak or passive. I have seen and witnessed how much strength it takes to allow oneself to let go. It's admirable, and something I respect with all I am. And on the other hand, a Dominant (especially in my case, with a TPE dynamic) is not simply a ‘taker’ as many may mistakenly put it.They are the one who holds the weight of both their own choices and the needs of the one serving them.

It is how I live, how I connect, and how I love. It requires consistency and intent every time. With a 24/7 dynamic, it can be demanding, but I would not want it any other way.

I could not have it any other way.
It was home, even before I knew the word for it.
